The Profound and the Mystical

The Profound and the Mystical

I went back to university in my mid thirties and completed a bachelor in Religious Sciences.

I wanted to learn and understand what motivates people who act the way they do, who are driven by their culture, faith or religion.  Every person will live their lives based on the values they have been taught or learned during their upbringing.  It also depends if they embraced or rejected their community way of life.  Each community is nevertheless moulded by their own storytelling and myths.

Over the last three decades, I have had the privilege to see and explore different types of religions, faiths, rituals, to try to piece together the mundane and the profound.  My college education in special education and my university degree in religious sciences helped me to better understand how individuals, families, communities define their meaning of life and death, creation and destruction, love and hate, sin and forgiveness, failure and redemption, etc.   I have incorporated many of the things that I have learned into my art.

The following drawing was done while I was in college.  I have incorporated symbols that I felt at the time defined how I felt about myself.  The central figure represents the higher power and spirit guide from which the inner child is protected.  There is a horse, a drum, two trees of life, feathers, beaded necklace, a rainbow, flowers with hearts, three spirits at the door with an invitation to go to the other side, a moose, and laying on the left shoulder is myself, possibly dreaming of some mystic quest.  A teacher at the time said I had all the signs of being an urban shaman.

This green cardboard surface was the cover of my high school english language notebook.
I had imagined these four alien characters  to be friendly.
I started using the heart shaped flower motifs in high school.
These can be found in a score of pieces I created over the years.

These paintings, drawings and sketches are an interpretation of how I viewed the spiritual world and my attempts to put those feelings into lines, colours and imagery.
