The Fence and The Tulips

I completed "The Fence and the Tulips" in November 2012 and had it framed in early December.

Canvas size: 30"x30"

Mediums: Winsor & Newton and Liquitex Acrylic Colour
  • Canvas surface: Cadmium Yellow Light Hue
  • Flower outlines: Cadmium Red Deep Hue, Phthalocyanine Green
  • Flower tints and tones: Indanthrene Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Medium Magenta, Cadmium Yellow Medium Hue, Light Portrait Pink, Unbleached Titanium, Titanium White, Gold
  • Flower stems and fence boards: Raw Sienna, Burn Umber
Paint brushes: Winsor & Newton and Dynasty #2, 6, 10, 12, 20 and 36

I can think of five stages that I need to complete to finish a painting:

1.  Choosing a theme:
I've been wanting to do a series of paintings on tulips and this is the first one out of the gate.  This painting is based on a series of photographs I took last May during my visit to the Ottawa Tulip Festival.  I enjoyed my walkabouts near the Rideau Canal and Dows Lake with my good friend Bob.  It was a beautiful day and the tulips were radiant (see photos below).

2.  Planning and sketching the outlines
I painted the surface of the 30x30 canvas with Cadmium Yellow Light Hue and used a Cadmium Deep Red Hue to draw the shapes and outlines of the tulips.

3.  Choosing and painting colours that will give the canvas a voice.
I layered multiple colours on both the petals, the leaves and added a fence as a background.

After many more layers of various tints and tones, and final touches to the fence and flowers, I sprayed the canvas with clear varnish to protect and draw out the acrylic colours.  The shapes on the fence boards are dramatic and are meant to bring the view to pause.  It's not just the tulips that are living entities - the fence may also have stories to tell.

4.  Framing the painting signifies that the work has been completed to my satisfaction - its like crowning the canvas, giving it thumbs up!  I brought the painting to the Wall Space Ottawa Art Gallery two weeks ago to have it framed.   I can't wait to get it back and put the results on this page.

5.  Hanging the painting on a wall signifies success, a milestone of sorts and should be a proud moment.  It is hanging in my dinning room.
